For the 2023-24 county season, and depending on player numbers, we are proposing to run boys and girls County and Development squads for each age group - U13, U14, U15 & U17 - starting in October.
Players new to county hockey are encouraged to get involved - previous experience of County hockey is not required!
This year, instead of a single trial or assessment date, players wishing to be considered for selection should attend at least 2 of the Summer Camps being run by the county through June, July, & August. These will be used by our coaches to assess players for selection to the proposed County and Development squads.
All players are expected to attend at least 2 Summer Camp sessions to be considered for selection to the county squads for the 2023-2024.cycle.
The cost is £17.50 per 3 hour session, payable in the Teamo App via Stripe. Information on how to register with Cambs Hockey on Teamo can be found here.

What is the difference between the County Squad & Development Squad for each age group?
The plan is to create greater flexibility and opportunity within our junior county system, and to make it much more player centric. It is universally recognised that players develop and progress at different speeds, ages, and times. It therefore does not make any sense to have a "closed" system whereby trials are held every September and players are either selected, or not selected, for the entire year. It promotes complacency amongst those that are selected and those that are unsuccessful have to wait a year before trying again.
Therefore, after the summer sessions, the majority of players will be assigned to either the ‘County Squad’, or a ‘Development Squad’, for their age group and gender. The same age group coaches will train both the County and the Development squads each month, so that a fair and ongoing assessment can be made of each player’s development and to ensure that we meet the RARE principles. Right Athlete, Right Environment, (at the Right Time).
If a player is progressing well at Development then they can be invited to attend the County Squad sessions to see if that would be a better environment for them. Likewise, if a player is finding it difficult in the County Squad, or their attendance is poor, the Development squad may be the right environment for them at that time. All decisions around movement between the County & Development Squads will be discussed with the player and their parents (guardians) first.
Theoretically a player could move from County to Development and back to County all in the same cycle.
What do I do if my young person is not available for any of the Summer Camp dates?
County are offering 8 county training sessions per age group over the summer period from June to August. These are on different days and at a number of locations within Cambridgeshire, which should enable most players to attend at least one or more of the dates.
If they are not able to attend any of the county sessions over the summer, then players will be offered the opportunity for assessment at a Development Squad training session. If appropriate, they would then be able to progress to the County squad during the cycle.
What do I do if my young person is unable to attend the summer sessions due to illness or injury?
If your young person is not able to attend their planned session(s) due to illness or injury, and you are not able to book an alternate session, please contact Jess Grammer using the contact card below, and the coaching team can advise.
My young person has been offered a Talent Academy trial in September. If they are unsuccessful, will they automatically be offered a place in their age group ‘County Squad’?
No. If a player who has not previously been at TA is not successful, they will not automatically drop into their age group County Squad. If the coaching team have had the opportunity to see the player at one or more of the summer sessions, then they will be able to make a decision as to whether they should join the County or Development Squad for their age group. Otherwise, they will be offered the opportunity for assessment at a Development Squad training session, and will then be able to progress to the County squad during the cycle if appropriate.
Please contact the county team as soon as you receive your decision about TA selection.
Can a Player be nominated to join the County or Development Squads later in the cycle?
Yes. If during the course of the cycle we observe a player, for example in a school match or club match, who is playing at the level required for county, or they are recommended by their school or club coach, they can be invited to the Development Squad for training, assessment, and if appropriate onward progression.
